The battle starts now … Get in the fight!
By Kelly Fenton, DPOC Vice Chair
Buckle up folks. The battle is about to be engaged!
Now that the convention in Milwaukee has mercifully concluded let’s think of this race as all square. Whoever outworks whom will prevail in November. AND IT MUST NOT BE THEM.
We’ve had a rough few weeks – the debate, President Biden’s Covid, the images of Trump ‘s faux heroism, the ongoing speculation about Biden’s viability as a candidate. Yet despite all that, the above truth holds: IT MUST NOT BE THEM.
Think of it this way: We’ve had three difficult weeks; they’ve had an atrocious four years, with a candidate who is guilty of 34 felonies, guilty of attempting to subvert democracy time and again, guilty of fomenting an insurrection, guilty of business fraud, guilty of sexual assault, guilty of stealing hundreds of top secret documents and refusing to return them, guilty of being a malignant narcissist, guilty of being an utterly indecent human being. More dire are his and his party’s plans for our future – and we’re talking three to five decades in a very dark wilderness if he is allowed to implement Project 2025 or select young Christian nationalist judges.
Our candidate is guilty of being old, of having a few cognitive lapses, of flubbing a debate. Their advantage, despite the chasm of difference between each candidates’ shortcomings, is shamelessness. They simply don’t care that Trump is unfit, whereas, as decent and concerned citizens, we care about the fitness of our candidate. Perhaps to a fault.
Here’s the bottom line: We have NO CHOICE but to put aside our despair and these notions I’m hearing that oh-my-God-we’re-gonna-lose! I’m not going to deny that I am feeling the trauma of 2016 all over again and it can be debilitating. Knotted up all day, not sleeping at night, a near-fugue state of resignation at times.
But. We. Can’t. Afford. That. Whoever our candidate ends up being – whether Joe Biden or Kamala Harris or someone else – the case against Trump remains our most potent weapon with independent and undecided voters. I have walked away from doors KNOWING the needle has moved in the right direction, though they may need one more push.
And there is as much good to fight for as there is evil to fight against. I think of the seemingly hopeless battles Black folks fought for their rights or women for theirs and how stacked the deck was against them the entire way. Nonetheless they persisted and they changed the world.
We are in a dead heat and we have considerably more agency than they did. Will we show the same courage and not let setbacks drain or deflate us? We must. It’s on the line these next three months.
Find out what you can do … then DO IT! Canvassing, phone banking, office support, sign-assembly, events planning, washing the damn office windows … DO IT! And let’s end this scourge once and for all.
