Constitutional Amendments are born of The Big Lie

Remember this when considering the two GOP-written constitutional amendments on your ballots April 2: They are both spawns of the Big Lie from the 2020 election. And like father, like son.

The Big Lie, you are certain to recall, was cynical Republicans crying foul over their many losses that year, including Donald Trump’s.

Never mind that Trump’s own Homeland Security official in charge of elections called 2020’s election “the most secure” in history.

These amendments are in response to private donations that help defray the costs of putting on elections. Thanks to the GOP’s neglect in properly funding these exercises in freedom, clerks all over the state are hamstrung financially. This outside help enhances election security and ensures that every voting district is equipped to run the most efficient — and safe — elections possible. This benefits all parties and upholds our rights.

It is sad to say it but it is the truth: If the Wisconsin GOP is for it, you can be fairly certain it is steeped in cynicism and a desire for political advantage. They fear anything that threatens their ill-gotten stranglehold on the state and they see fair and fully funded elections as one such example.

Furthermore, these amendments violate in spirit the separation- of-powers principle by trying to enact something Gov. Evers has already vetoed. When you can’t win via the legislative process, trying an end run is just petulant and wrong. It is, in other words, quintessentially Republican. Just vote no on both.
