Voter fraud in Wisconsin? Yes, it’s called gerrymandering

By Carol Lenz

It is a widely known fact that Wisconsin’s voting maps, perhaps the most gerrymandered in the nation, distort the votes of the people. While we may disagree on lots of things, Wisconsinites believe in fairness. And our current voting maps are not fair.

During last spring’s Wisconsin Supreme Court election, Janet Protaziewicz questioned the constitutionality of Wisconsin’s gerrymandered maps. She welcomed litigation to answer that question. That is one reason why Janet Protaziewicz beat her opponent ... by 11 points. As I said, Wisconsinites believe in fairness.

But not everyone is on board with fair elections.

Republican leaders in the state legislature are threatening to use their gerrymandered super majority to impeach Protaziewicz who is against gerrymandering to ensure their gerrymandered majority in perpetuity. That’s a mouthful. Basically, they want to use the rigged system to ensure they can continue to rig the system. And they are willing to spend millions of our money to silence our voices. Fiscal conservatives they are not. And they are definitely not believers in government of, by and for the people.

Wisconsin has been called a democracy desert but that could change if the Wisconsin Supreme Court rules the 2021 voting maps as unconstitutional. Fair elections would be a great first step in healing the political divisiveness in our state. Granted, this would only be a short-term solution. Wisconsin really needs a non-partisan, independent redistricting process to solve the gerrymandering problem forever.
