Our democracy depends on you

By Kelly Fenton

As we head toward another stressful presidential election, it’s tempting to focus on all the happy news, from major legislation that addresses climate change in the most meaningful way in our history, to an infrastructure bill that is set to confront critical needs and add American jobs to all the robust economic indicators. The recession economists feared lessens with every vibrant jobs report despite spikes in interest rates designed to curb stubborn inflation. Now those rates are likely to begin dropping.

Inflation itself, while still troublesome, is by far the lowest among all the G7 nations — and dropping — while wage growth climbs.

And yet, given all that good news, our primary focus in 2024 must be on the imminent threat to our way of life.

Democracy is on the brink. Our freedoms are at risk. If that strikes you as hyperbole, you are not paying attention. We can never dismiss the attempts by the last administration to overturn the results of a lawful election. Nor can we shrug off behavior that 10 years ago would have been inconceivable — stuff of hysterical fiction. Nor can we forget that one of the candidates has been charged with 91 felonies, nor turn away from that candidate’s threats of future retribution. Red flags do not come any brighter, nor alarm bells any more deafening than that.

Quite simply, our democracy depends on you. It is up to you to defend it. We have only one chance to get this right.
