The future of American freedom is at stake

By Carol Lenz

The Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, and the Bill of Rights, collectively known as the 'Charters of Freedom', have secured the freedoms of the American people for over two centuries. Are they still our guiding values?

The threat to our freedom is real. Just listen to the authoritarian rhetoric of some politicians, and even some religious leaders. At stake are freedoms for women, for people of color, for religious minorities, for LGBTQ+ people, for people who like to read books. Even the very freedom to vote, which is at the heart of democracy, is being threatened. Unfortunately, many who took an oath to 'preserve, protect and defend the Constitution' are failing us. If we lose our freedom, America as we know it is done.

On a positive note, lots of great things are happening. Our economy is doing remarkedly well. Wages and jobs are growing. Infrastructure projects and new manufacturing opportunities are finally happening. Positive steps are being taken to address climate change. Prescription drug prices are coming down.

That said, preserving American freedom must be prioritized over everything else. President Biden said, 'Personal freedom is fundamental to who we are as Americans. There’s nothing more important, nothing more sacred.'

The fascist ideology of the MAGA movement, formerly the GOP, has been percolating for years. Will Americans meet the challenge and preserve our freedom? Or, will our 'Charters of Freedom' become mere historic relics? That is the choice upon us.
