Tell WE Energies to stop using methane gas
By Penny Bernard Shaber
Did you know that “natural gas” is not natural? It is methane gas with a better sounding name. It is a fossil fuel that produces a lot of greenhouse gases when used for electricity and to heat our homes.
Did you know that WE Energies is planning to expand the use of methane gas in Wisconsin? Plans for methane gas plant expansions are with the Public Service Commission now. Proposals to raise energy prices are also before the Public Service Commission. The PSC decides on expansions and rate increases. Learn about the PSC at psc.wi.gov.
Many of the Fox Cities, Milwaukee County and southeast Wisconsin get electricity and heat from methane gas delivered through WE Energies. A public hearing is scheduled for Oct. 1 at 2 and 6 p.m. at the Cesar Chavez Community Center, 2221 Douglas Ave., Racine. Another is Oct. 3 at 1 and 6 p.m. at the Great Lakes Ballroom Drury Plaza Hotel, 700 N Water St., Milwaukee.
Comments asking WE Energies to not raise our rates and not increase the use of methane gas can be filed here: apps.psc.wi.gov/pages/publicComment. htm or search the internet for Public Service Commission Wisconsin.
Information about the proposals can be found by checking the Wisconsin Chapter Sierra Club website at addup. sierraclub.org/campaigns/leavegas- in-the-past.
Tell the PSC increasing the use of methane gas now will tie Wisconsin to fossil fuels for decades. Now is the time to move away from fossil fuels, not use more.
